Keeping the Sabbath Sacred
Have you ever had one of those moments when someone showed up with exactly what you needed?
Maybe it was a little extra cash to get you through, a kind word when your heart was heavy, a home-cooked meal that landed on your doorstep at just the right time, or even just someone’s presence when you were lonely.
I’ve had those moments. For me, that person was Naomi.
I don’t think I ever saw her hold back good from anyone. Kindness seemed to flow from her effortlessly—like golden drops of honey dripping from a tree. She always had encouragement to give, compassion to share, and the ability to be fully present, no matter what else was happening in her life. She lived out of overflow.
Here’s the truth: we can only give what we already carry.
If our hearts are filled with anger, we’ll spill anger. If we’re full of grace, grace will come out. What overflows from us in the big and small moments of life is simply a reflection of what’s been poured into us. That’s why Proverbs 4:23 reminds us, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”
God doesn’t just give us enough to scrape by—He fills us so that we can live full and still have more than enough to share. His supply is abundant, and it’s meant to flow through us. Paul puts it this way in 2 Corinthians 9:11–12, “You will be enriched in every way to be generous in every way, which through us will produce thanksgiving to God.”
Think about that. When we live in the overflow—when generosity, kindness, joy, or encouragement spill out of us—it not only meets someone’s need but also points people back to God in gratitude.
A mentor once told me, “Everyone brings joy to a room. Some when they enter it, others when they leave it.”
The question is: what kind of presence do you want to carry? Will you live an empty and guarded life—or a full and overflowing one?
